Dear CCSD Family,
Since the school shooting last week in Georgia, there have naturally been heightened concerns from our students, parents, and community about school safety and security.
As a mother of three, there is nothing that weighs more heavily on my heart than the thought of any harm coming to our children, especially in the form of an act of mass violence. It is a grave concern that I carry as superintendent. Our students deserve a safe space to learn and grow, and my resolve, and that of our team, is unwavering in maintaining safe schools.
In the last week, there have been increased social media rumors and posts, both locally and throughout the state and country, alluding to possible threats against schools. Some of these comments, which are often captured in screenshots that are widely circulated, have referenced schools in neighboring counties, specific schools in CCSD, or school buildings in general.
Our district takes every single threat seriously. Any mention of any threat in any circumstance is investigated by the district and our law enforcement partners with the goal of determining whether an actual threat exists. These investigations occur around-the-clock and include interviewing individuals, reviewing available intelligence, and utilizing established threat assessment processes. Only when the district and law enforcement feel confident do we announce that there is no credible threat. In the case of the recent social media posts, no credible threats have been identified.
Whether a threat is found to be credible, please know that anyone who makes or perpetuates any threatening comments will be pursued to the fullest extent, and any student found to be complicit will face school consequences and possible criminal charges.
For those who reached out directly to us or law enforcement with concerns recently, we greatly appreciate you following the “see something, say something” process. Threats should be immediately reported to authorities for proper investigation–not shared or reposted on social media. Parents, please help reinforce this with your students. Always contact your school, district security, or local law enforcement agency with information about potential threats. The posting or spreading of rumors through social media channels increases fear in the community and greatly complicates investigations, making it more difficult to properly assess the claims being made. Your help in dispelling and controlling rumors is greatly appreciated; we will also do our best in those efforts by communicating with our families when we become aware of concerns.
